The Power of the Tiny Venue: A Director’s Take
You ever been to one of those shows that changes you…
And not from some big production you attend like an expensive amphitheater.
But in a coffee shop, bar, or a pub, or a rec hall with mismatched chairs— a place so small you’re practically breathing with the artist.
That’s the magic I’m chasing with Song of Sunset.
This series is a music documentary filmed right here in Bend, Oregon— and it captures something I think we’re all craving right now: raw, real connection between artists and the communities that hold them up.
What I’ve discovered so far is this: These small venues aren’t just places where people perform. They’re emotional gyms where artists challenge and stretch themselves. Where audiences open up and support. And the atmosphere? Absolutely electric.
Where else can you watch a pro with 20 years under their belt follow a teenager playing their first-ever original song? Where else does vulnerability not just happen, but get celebrated?
That’s what these spaces do. They don’t just launch music careers. They stitch a town’s identity together— one shaky mic stand at a time.
If music matters to you— if community matters— then I want you to be a part of this.
We’re premiering Song of Sunset on October 8 at Volcanic Theater Pub in Bend. That night also kicks off our Indiegogo campaign to keep the series going strong. Sign up now for early access, behind-the-scenes updates, and a chance to support something that’s 100% homegrown.
Because small stages hold big stories and we’re just getting started.
