Song of Sunset

  • A film premiere.

  • A live songwriter round.

  • A national conversation about AI and the future of small stages.

What is the future of small stages in a world shaped by AI-generated music and artwork?

Song of Sunset brings that conversation to Bend during shoulder season, pairing award-winning documentary storytelling with nationally recognized independent artists.

Evening Experience

  • The evening begins with a live performance from a local Bend-based band who composed an original song exclusively for the Song of Sunset soundtrack. As doors open, guests are invited to enjoy a relaxed cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres and drinks, settling into the atmosphere before the program begins. This opening set serves as both welcome and overture, a first note that connects the community’s creative spirit to the larger conversation unfolding on stage.

  • The centerpiece of the evening is the screening of the award-winning feature-length documentary Song of Sunset. Set in the year 2175, the film unfolds through the voice of a holographic archivist who recounts how society is emerging from a four-generation cultural ice age — triggered when Narrative Containment Ordinance 47.11 outlawed small stages and communal performance. Within the Living Archive, dedicated archivists establish learning centers designed to help communities rediscover the power of shared song and story. The narrative takes a dramatic turn when an archaeological discovery reveals raw, unencrypted creative “seeds” from Earth Year 2025 and beyond — artifacts that may hold the key to restoring humanity’s connection to live music, storytelling, and collective expression.

  • Following the opening performance, the evening transitions into a 30-minute AI + Creativity Panel featuring leading AI technologists and innovators. This moderated discussion explores the evolving role of generative art tools and Large Language Models in the small-stage ecosystem. Panelists will respond directly to themes raised in the film, examining how independent musicians can thoughtfully navigate both the opportunities and the risks of AI-driven creative services. From new collaborative possibilities to concerns around authorship, authenticity, and economic impact, the conversation takes a balanced, forward-looking approach to one of the most pressing questions facing today’s artistic community.

  • The evening concludes with this intimate Round of Songwriters, where nationally and regionally touring artists sit alongside Bend-based voices — all featured in the documentary — trading songs and the stories behind them. In true small-stage fashion, the format is stripped down and conversational, inviting the audience into the creative process rather than placing it at a distance. As the final notes fade, the Riverhouse becomes more than a venue; it becomes a living answer to the film’s central question, reaffirming the enduring power of shared song, shared space, and shared story.
