M & J Tavern: Open Mic
This week, I had the pleasure of filming at one of Bend’s most iconic community spaces — M & J Tavern — as part of the ongoing production of Song of Sunset. I sat down with CJ Hitchcock, the general manager of the historic bar, and Mike Martin, who has hosted one of the longest-running open mic nights in Central Oregon.
My history with both CJ and Mike runs deep. This tavern is more than just a local watering hole — it’s where I cut my teeth as a live performer and began shaping my identity as a songwriter. Returning to this space with a camera crew felt both nostalgic and celebratory.
Their interviews were honest, warm, and full of insight. CJ offered a beautiful reflection on the history of M & J and its role as a cultural anchor — a space lovingly nicknamed “Bend’s Living Room.” Mike shared stories from the open mic nights — moments of breakthrough, community support, and the magic that happens when someone takes the stage for the very first time.
Up next, I’ll be sitting down with Mari, who runs a couple of well-loved open mics around town. She brings a fresh perspective on what it means to create a welcoming space for performers of all levels — and why open mics continue to be essential to the lifeblood of a music community.
More soon from the road — and from the small stages that keep the spirit of live music alive.
